Meerschaum pipe - n. 122
Elegant in its simplicity and immediately recognizable for its strong colour contrast, this pre-smoked meerschaum pipe features an elongated profile reminiscent of traditional reading pipes. The compact, softly shaped bowl is paired with a particularly long black mouthpiece with a gentle curve, a feature that defines much of the character of this distinctive example.
The meerschaum body displays the characteristic light ivory-cream colour, providing a striking contrast with the dark mouthpiece. A metal band is positioned between the bowl and stem, adding a subtle bright accent to the transition. The light surface shows minor variations and traces consistent with a previously smoked pipe, as documented in the photographs.
Meerschaum has a long tradition in pipe making and has historically been appreciated for its porous nature and its ability to absorb part of the moisture and residues produced during smoking. With continued use, meerschaum pipes can also gradually develop warmer shades and patina, giving each example an increasingly individual appearance over time.
A distinctive pre-owned and already smoked meerschaum pipe with considerable vintage appeal, particularly notable for the combination of its light bowl, elongated silhouette and black mouthpiece. As no clearly identifiable maker's mark is visible, we prefer not to attribute the pipe to a particular manufacturer or production period. The photographs show the actual condition of this specific example and form an integral part of its description.
