Meerschaum pipe - n. 121
An exceptionally distinctive decorative treatment defines this pre-smoked meerschaum pipe in a classic Billiard shape. Its proportions are traditional, with a tall regular bowl and straight shank, yet the familiar silhouette is completely transformed by the dense geometric decoration covering almost the entire light-coloured surface.
The meerschaum body displays a characteristic ivory-cream colour and is covered with an extremely regular pattern of small carved circular motifs. Across the bowl these elements are arranged in horizontal bands, alternating smaller circles with more pronounced recesses, while the decoration becomes finer and more uniform along the shank. The result is a richly detailed surface producing attractive variations of light and shadow.
Equally distinctive is the shaped dark mouthpiece. Around the junction it features a succession of rings, rounded sections and pronounced moulded details that reinforce the ornamental character of the pipe. Towards the bit, the mouthpiece gradually becomes more linear with a gentle curve, providing a pleasing visual balance against the elaborate decoration of the meerschaum body.
Meerschaum has a long history in pipe making and has traditionally been appreciated for its porous nature and its ability to absorb part of the moisture produced during smoking. With continued use it can also gradually develop its own warmer patina. This pre-owned Billiard meerschaum pipe is particularly appealing for its unusual ornamental workmanship; as no identifiable maker's mark is visible, we prefer not to attribute it to a specific manufacturer or production period. The photographs show the actual condition of this specific example and form an integral part of its description.
