John Sterling - n. 131
Classic lines and well-balanced proportions define this John Sterling 6505, a pre-smoked pipe with an understated and elegant silhouette. The tall bowl, with gently tapered walls, flows naturally into a long straight shank, creating a traditional profile that strongly evokes the styling of pipes from past decades.
The smooth briar features a warm reddish-brown colour that allows the natural variations of the grain to remain clearly visible. Different patterns and flame-like grain can be appreciated across the sides of the bowl and along the shank, enhanced by the bright finish. A long, gradually tapered straight black mouthpiece completes the design while maintaining its clean visual balance.
The history behind the name is also of interest. John Sterling is documented as a brand whose pipes were manufactured by various companies for F&K Cigar Co.; the identifying symbol associated with the brand is the JS mark, which can also be seen on the mouthpiece of this example. John Sterling therefore appears to have been a brand supplied through more than one manufacturer, making it advisable not to attribute this particular pipe to a specific maker solely on the basis of its name.
The John Sterling stamping on the shank, the 6505 model number and the JS monogram on the mouthpiece all add to the vintage interest of this example. In the absence of more precise documentation, we would not assign an exact production year to the pipe. A distinctive pre-owned and already smoked John Sterling 6505 for enthusiasts who appreciate vintage pipes and less commonly encountered marques. The photographs show the actual condition of this specific pipe and form an integral part of its description.
