Fiamma di Re - Gazza Ladra n. 1
This Fiamma di Re belongs to the evocative Gazza Ladra series, one of the special creations through which Andrea Pascucci expresses the most imaginative and personal side of his work. Its name pays tribute to Gioachino Rossini and his celebrated opera “La gazza ladra” (The Thieving Magpie). The reference is especially meaningful for Pascucci, a pipe maker from Pesaro, creating an ideal connection between his craftsmanship and one of the most illustrious figures in the cultural history of his hometown.
Composed by Rossini and first performed in 1817, “La gazza ladra” is among the Pesaro-born composer's best-known works, immediately recognizable also for its celebrated overture. Pascucci adopted its name for a series of pipes with an unconventional character, where tradition gives way to imagination and a bolder exploration of form. This Freeform Gazza Ladra likewise appears conceived more as a small briar sculpture than as a straightforward interpretation of a traditional pipe shape.
The bowl is unquestionably the focal point. Broad, rounded and strongly sculpted, it features an unusual angled upper section that appears almost to overlap the body beneath it. A thin dark line follows its profile, emphasizing the separation between the two volumes and creating an unusual and immediately recognizable aesthetic detail.
The smooth polished finish beautifully enhances the briar, with its deep brown colouring crossed by vivid honey and amber flame grain. The grain rises along the bowl and continually changes direction as it follows the curved, asymmetrical surfaces, giving the pipe a different personality depending on the angle from which it is viewed.
Another distinctive feature is the worked metal band positioned between shank and mouthpiece. Its irregular surface provides a bright contrast between the warm tones of the briar and the deep black of the long, gently curved and tapered stem. It is a decorative detail that further strengthens the character of the pipe without disturbing the elegance of its profile.
Weighing 52 grams and classified 2 Note, this Gazza Ladra is a Fiamma di Re with a particularly distinctive personality. Andrea Pascucci brings together briar, imagination, the cultural heritage of Pesaro and freedom of design, transforming his tribute to Rossini into an original and instantly recognizable collector's pipe.
